We a war ‘gainst sin are waging

We’re contending for the right.
Ev’ry day the battle’s raging;
Help us, Lord, to win the fight.
Gather round the standard bearer;
Gather round in strength of youth.
Ev’ry day the prospect’s fairer
While we’re battling for the truth.
You silly cry-er you. d: I’m glad I decided to serve a mission too. It is the best thing ever! I love it. I love every part of it. I just want to make sure I don’t just look like a disciple of Jesus Christ.. I want to BE one. Forever. Not just as a missionary. I have to make sure that everything I’ve become, or want to become, isn’t Sister Schuerman. It has to be Sarah. Because if it’s not really ME, if it’s just a personality that comes on with the name-tag.. then I’ve wasted a year and a half of my life. That’s why I asked you to write down your vision for me. I’d love if you did that on paper so I can read it later. Just your vision of who you want ME to be when I come home. And then if you could also write how you’ve seen ME change already. If you have. And dad can do it too. (: PS This month’s plan is to study ch. 4 from PMG and to fellowship a Less Active (LA) member. Have fun! (:
So.. this week! September 8 2014
I almost don’t think it’s fair how many miracles we’ve been seeing.
Jane and John
So we received a media referral from someone in the trailer park here and we decided to contact it on Sunday.. So we pull up and we get a call from our WML and he asks if we know Jane and John.. I say, “I know of them, but I don’t know them.” he then proceeds to tell us that he knows their daughter, a recent convert, form the ward he was in in Iowa. And the bishop was supposed to be contacting Jane and John about getting them some help (they’re former investigators) and bishop also wanted missionaries to go visit them. So we’re stoked to go see these people.. esp because they live in the trailer park we just pulled up to. Then he tells us the lot #.. same as the media referral. What?! So we go see them and they’re super excited to meet with us! YAY!!!
Sunday morning we get in the car to go to church.. the phone rings. Someone named Polly (complete stranger) wants directions to church! What?! This NEVER happens. Ever. We can’t even get investigators to church, let alone STRANGERS. So we’re freaking out. So dang excited. You have no idea. We met her at church, she sat with us, she has a lot of questions about the BoM she’s been reading (and she’s in Alma 46 by the way!) so she said she’ll call us to set up a time. Right now her fiance’ is recovering from surgery so we’ll see what happens. But seriously, so awesome! When we got home we searched through the area book and found her teaching record. Missionaries found her in May. So awesome.
We basically just have the most legit new investigator ever. Seriously. We were teaching ‘God reveals his gospel in every dispensation’ (3rd principle in lesson 1 of PMG) and she goes, “So, do we have a prophet today?!” HECK YEAH WE DO! Show her the BoM, “Do you want me to start reading this?” YES YES YES YES So legitimate.
Next miracle hits close to home…
I haven’t gotten any mail in over a month. One night I came home to SIX letters AND a package containing TWO more letters and butterbeer! Best night ever! Too bad we were miserable from eating so we couldn’t drink the butterbeer. But soon! Hahah. And… I’m basically all healed! I’ve never gone through the steps of a cold so quickly before. #miracles. I was dead beat and had to come home early one night.. worst missionary ever. And now I’m pretty much all better. Just a lame cough, barely stuffy nose, and a tiny bit of weird voice still. But none of that matters. I still love life. I love being a missionary. I’m so glad I’m happy. It’s the best. I just want other people to be this happy. We met so many people this weekend.. a lot of former investigators. And it’s just so sad. They are all so miserable. And some of them don’t even realize it.. they think it’s normal. It’s not! You can be SO HAPPY! I just want to give them happiness- but I can’t. You can’t force happy on people.
Also, Sister Wilde is a boss awesome missionary. We love being together. Hah, her birthday is Dec 2nd. We’re going to get better at taking more pictures.. sorry. The ones we do have are on her camera. I’ll have to try and get em for ya. But seriously we’re working hard on being better every day. Just trying to save the world. We love it. And why not? I mean, if we don’t, what are we doing here?
Something I learned this week from Sister Mendenhall was when you ask “Why me?” think to yourself, “Why not me?” She was talking to a dying uncle and she asked, “Why you?” and he replied to her, “Why not me?” and that just amazes me. We all need to have that courage when the Lord asks us to do something. Y’know?
I love y’all a ton! Have a marvelous day! Stay awesome. Pray hard. Study hard. Don’t just look like a disciple, be one.
Your Favorite Missionary,
Sister Schuerman

Each life that touches ours for good

Reflects thine own great mercy, Lord;
Thou sendest blessings from above
Thru words and deeds of those who love.
What greater gift dost thou bestow,
What greater goodness can we know
Than Christlike friends, whose gentle ways
Strengthen our faith, enrich our days.
When such a friend from us departs,
We hold forever in our hearts
A sweet and hallowed memory,
Bringing us nearer, Lord, to thee.
For worthy friends whose lives proclaim
Devotion to the Savior’s name,
Who bless our days with peace and love,
We praise thy goodness, Lord, above.
So, I’m still in the Savory Ponds Ward! Sister Knowlton is outta here though.. she’s sweeping, training, and getting ready to die all at once. So I have… Sister Wilde! Super funny because we were in the MTC at the same time.. just in a different zone and district. Sister Hall trained her! I was pretty surprised to get her as a comp. After a day together though I have a feeling it’ll be a great transfer. (: She wants to be happy and enjoy being a missionary.. PERFECT! Because I’m happy and I enjoy being a missionary more than you can even imagine. And somehow I totally spaced getting a picture of us… But I’m sure there’ll be some next week.
Man.. I really don’t even know what to talk about this week. It was a long week.. I made a wedding cake.. I had like an hour to decorate it so it’s definitely not perfect but that’s life. We had a wedding and a baptism. So awesome. Sunday was terrifying though because they were SO late to church. Like, 20 minutes late. But, they made it in time for him to be confirmed. Phew. We were freaking out.
Uhm.. this week I decided I need to get over myself and make do with the things I already own. So I’m not buying a new coat or watch. Not even a bag until this one actually breaks.. it’s close, but it still works. I just realized it’s not about that.. y’know? And I have less than 10 months left. I can make it happen. I don’t need a ton of crap to mail home later.
What else is there to tell you.. I don’t know.. I’m sick, again. Don’t know why the heck that keeps happening. I think that’s why I don’t know what to write about. My head is pretty much dead. Ah well. Yesterday was like the longest Pday of my life because 2 hours of it weren’t spend emailing. Lawls.. A member bought us Jamba Juice! I love that place. Had a nice Carrot Orange something or other with an extra shot of Vit C and Zinc for my illness. It’s too late to matter though. ):
So I was freaking out hardcore over the weekend, not really sure why.. I just had a hard time. I got a blessing though and it was so great. Made everything all better. Funny how that works. d: But really, it brought me comfort on so many levels. (:
I don’t know what else there is… I love y’all a ton!
So, I’ll email next week! Hopefully I’ll be feeling better and the email will be better. Hahah. Much love, let me know if y’all need anything.
Sister Schuerman

Then conquer we must

when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto:
“In God is our trust!”
So this week we were talking to a guy…
“So are you two single?”
“Well, we’re missionaries so we come out here for a year and a half and we leave dating, school, family, and everything.”
“We have missionaries at our church, they still date.”
“Yeah? Well.. we don’t.”
“Well, are you single?”
“Hahah, we don’t date while we’re missionaries. We just go around and bring people closer to Christ.. So do you know if any of your neighbors could use a prayer?”
“I don’t know, you could go knock all their doors. I’ll watch your car- I’m the head of the neighborhood watch here.”
…uhm…that’s really good for you..? Bye creeper!
The other week in MCM… (missionary coordination meeting)
We were sitting there and this lady, ward missionary, starts talking about the apartments we work in like every day. “That’s just not a place for sisters! You’re going to be walking along one day and you’ll be in the hallway and some man can just put against the wall and slit your throat! Like, 80% of those people at least are committing felonies.” It was soo funny. It was seriously SO stinking hilarious. They aren’t that bad.. I mean they smell gross and everyone is on drugs and stuff.. But I’ve never really felt in danger. Selma is way worse than these ghetto apts. d:
“Let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly..”
So I’ve decided that my thoughts aren’t as virtuous as they should be.. so now every time an un-virturous thought enters into my mind I recite D&C 121:45 It’s actually helped a lot. (: Not like I’m thinking awful things.. but if I start thinking about unconsecrated things.. like school or family.. I want to be fully consecrated. There is no point in me being here if I’m not consecrated.
Mosiah 3:25
“And if they be evil they are consigned to an awful view of their own guilt and abominations, which doth cause them to shrink from the presence of the Lord into a state of misery and endless torment, from whence they can no more return; therefore they have drunk damnation to their own souls.”
Something I’ve come to understand out here is that Judgement day will not be what we usually think. God isn’t going to damn us- rather we will feel to guilty if we’re standing in His presence without having repented. As I was teaching this principle- we choose where we will stay in the next life.. something hit me. We have to decide what we deserve.. what we’re worthy of. It reminded me of when I would want to do extra chores for money and you’d say, “Well, what do you think your work is worth?” or when I would babysit and you’d ask, “How much will you ask for?” and I replied, “I don’t know.. Just whatever they offer I’ll take.” I realize now what you were trying to help me learn from that. I have to know what I’m worth, I have to know what I deserve for my efforts.. because when I’m standing before God I have to be bold enough to say, “Yes, Father.. I was never perfect.. but I worked dang hard and I do deserve Celestial Glory and I that is where I will feel most at home.”
Women and the Priesthood
“Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak(JST says rule)…” 1 Corinthians 14:34
We don’t have the priesthood because that’s not how God wanted it to be. Ohkay? Sheesh people. Let it go.
I don’t know why I keep getting the comps that don’t have their ears pierced.. but Sister Knowlton got her pierced on Monday!!! It was so fabulous!
“Is it going to hurt?”
“No.. have you ever had a tattoo or anything?”
“No! My body is pure!”
“Not anymore!”
SOOO funny. But she did it and she loves it. (:
Sister Knowlton and I have decided we need to ask for more refs. So now I keep a tally.. Every person we don’t ask is 10 jumping jacks. And whoever asks for the most gets free froyo from the other. It’s kind of good.. but kind of bad because now we just race to ask for refs and it gets awkward sometimes.. Oh well. We’re working on it. d:
We went to see a former.. their neighbor was on his porch though, so we stopped there to chat. Turns out his friend just gave him a BoM and the friend is a LA that S. Knowlton taught in a previous area! What?! So we exchanged numbers and we should be seeing him in a week! Hooray!
And.. transfers are coming!
This transfer has been AMAZING. I have loved it so much. Seriously. It’s been fabulous. Excited to see what transfer doctrine has in store for us! I’ll let you know Monday!
Stay awesome!

I’m Trying To Be Like Jesus

I’m following in his ways.
I’m trying to love as he did, in all that I do and say.
At times I am tempted to make a wrong choice,
But I try to listen as the still small voice whispers,
“Love one another as Jesus loves you.
Try to show kindness in all that you do.
Be gentle and loving in deed and in thought,
For these are the things Jesus taught.”
I’m trying to love my neighbor;
I’m learning to serve my friends.
I watch for the day of gladness when Jesus will come again.
I try to remember the lessons he taught.
Then the Holy Spirit enters into my thoughts, saying:
“Love one another as Jesus loves you.
Try to show kindness in all that you do.
Be gentle and loving in deed and in thought,
For these are the things Jesus taught.”

“I hate to spoil the ending for you, but everything is going to be ohkay.”
“God doesn’t do random.”

This week has been marvelous. Because I’m a missionary, duh.
So which type of emails are preferred? Miracles/highlights or a day-by-day reporting? I feel like the miracles/highlights is more fun. d:

So, we had ZONE CONFERENCE! I love zone conference. It was really awesome because Sister Mendenhall came up to me and hugged me and said, “I got my training from you and Sister Knowlton! I titled it #behappy because you two are so happy and because of the necklace y’all showed me that says #happy!” It was awesome. I love Sister Mendenhall. She’s an amazing woman. She might be coming to the mall with us today! She’s such a model. I love her. And she and President Mendenhall are SO cute! Zone Conf was great though. Learned a lot.. got yapped at about housing and cars for like a year. Sheesh. It was a slap in the face to realize that my brand new Ford Fusion probably cost 20,000-30,000 though.. so really it cost 200,000-300,000 because tithing paid for it.. Ouch. So, I was extra happy when we got a clean car award. Because it shows how much we appreciate the members paying tithing. Anyway though. It was super crazy. I walked out of there totally inspired.. Because yesterday I said goodbye to y’all and became a missionary.. and tomorrow I will say hello and take off the badge for good.. today is the only day I have to be a missionary. I know in the end that is exactly how I will feel… And I don’t want to give my departing testimony and have to say, “I’m not ready to go home- I haven’t changed the way I wanted to.. I’m not done.” No way. I will be ready, I will have changed, I will have completed what He sent me out here to do.

Honestly I think this is my favorite miracle this week.. It was a rough day.. we were exhausted. Beyond exhausted.. and hungry.. counting down hours/minutes to supper kind of hungry.. and I was craving hamburgers like no other. So supper time comes and the member opens the door.. and I smell hamburgers. We were SO darn happy. Hahahah. And I was like, “Thank you for following the promptings of the Holy Ghost when you decided what to make for supper.” and it was so cool because she replied, “I almost just made hot dogs instead.. I asked my daughter if I should do hamburgers still and she said.. ‘yeah, I feel like you should.'” Ohkay, if that isn’t proof that no matter what kind of day you’re having GOD LOVES YOU and KNOWS YOU nothing is. We left pretty motivated.. slightly depressed because it was in the home that we found out about Robin Williams dying. SO SAD! ): “If you’re not enough without it, you will never be enough with it.” We have to be pleased with who we are despite what we have.. because what we have never changes who we are. He didn’t understand who he was..

Our progressing investigators broke up with us.. it was sad.. but I had some awesome studies this morning.. I made a huge connection with Repentance and Consecration.. The 2nd and 3rd lines in L3 Repentance blew my mind this morning. Anything about us that isn’t God’s will requires repenting.. that includes righteous desires.. So if I desire for those two to be baptized, and it’s not God’s will for that to happen right now.. I need to repent. I need to see God as he REALLY is.. and so I need to see His will perfectly.. and then I need to see myself just like Him.. so my will needs to be just like His.. so I need to see the world like He does.. and so I need to have the same desires for the world as He does.. It reminded me of Moroni 7:48 “…that when he shall appear we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is; that we may have this hope; that we may be purified even as he is pure.” Then I noticed that in PMG it says something like, after you repent you MAY fall short” … It isn’t required. You don’t have to mess up again. If you truly repent you won’t make that mistake again. Sure, you’ll still mess up.. but it will be in different ways. Because as we learn/grow more we realize other places where we need to repent.. we won’t just keep repenting for the same mistake. Called to repentance- it was awesome.

Man, I’m totally out of time because I have to write President Mendenhall still. I don’t want to be one of those slackers he keeps talking about that don’t email him.. he’s all, “I know who you are and I know where you live” hahahah. They’re so legit.

Read the scriptures, read PMG, pray.. it will change your life if you let it.
I love y’all!

How can you not be happy with a sky like this

How can you not be happy with a sky like this

July 28th

Sarah has been transferred to Westminster.  She has been there a week and loves it.  It is a smaller ward. But still much larger than she grew up with.  She really sounds and looks good.  Happy and excited about sharing the gospel.  She didn’t send any new pictures this week and I didn’t take the time to cut and paste her email.  She said many miracles are happening. And she is stoked!  She said she loves us all and the church is true and I think it is called “Open your mouth”  They talk to everyone they meet about the Savior.  🙂

Sorry so long to update, been extremely busy!

God gave us families to help us become what He wants us to be—
This is how He shares His love, for the fam’ly is of God.

So how is everyone? I hope you’re all doing well.
Guess what we got to do yesterday! We went to Junior Primary’s Sharing Time…
First off- Junior Primary is a thing! I looked like an idiot..
“What’s Junior Primary?”
“It’s 7 and under.”
“But doesn’t the whole primary have sharing time together?”
It’s fine… It was so much fun sitting in primary again though. We taught about baptism.. it was so different teaching 30+ kids ages 3-7 in sharing time… I’m used to teaching 3-7 year olds… but there were only like 4 in my class.. add 30 extra kids and it gets A LOT harder. So, basically what I learned is- It’s a dang good thing I’ve decided not to be an elementary school teacher.

And our new WML is on fire. He’s so excited and ready to help us so that should be awesome. Our mission president is going to come to the ward for the 5th Sunday in August to talk to all the members about missionary work.. they’re starting to catch on I think. There are so many young couples in the ward while the husbands are selling pest control (and making bank, by the way.) and they’re all a bunch of RMs and it’s AWESOME for us. (: They’re helping other members get motivated and everything. Lovin’ it. I’m excited to be a member missionary now that I really understand what it means. What’s going to be really weird is being at home and seeing missionaries.. supa crazy. But I still have time. Definitely not rushing this one.
Know what else I learned this week? Exercise Science major… it requires classes that involve cadavers. Uhm- no thanks! I’ll be just fine not working on dead people. So, not exercise science after all. Dietitics it is. Unless I find out that involves flipping dead people too.. So nasty! SO NASTY! I just can’t even. Ugh! I got nauseas while she was telling me about it…
So in other news. Last Monday I got to make a scripture case! It’s so legit- I’ll send a picture don’t worry. (: This Monday a member is teaching us how to decorate cakes! I’m so excited! I’m also learning how to play the piano.. I mean, I know the basics so I’m pretty much just practicing whenever I can. I’m getting some tips this coming Saturday from a lovely member.
The members here have been on my facebook like crazy apparently. Hahah. And one of the YW here gets on my FB and adds people I know that way they can post more stuff and tag me in it.. lawls. Transfers are almost here! We find out this weekend.. I just don’t know what to expect at all.. I was sure I was leaving until yesterday.. now I’m not so sure. But I know it’s in the Lord’s hands so we’ll just wait and see what happens!

We had a baptism! The elders mostly worked with the guy, but we did some too. It was amazing. It was a seriously amazing baptism. He’s going to be a stellar member of the church. He might even serve a mission in a year! (He’s 18) So I think it was Tuesday.. can’t remember any more.. but whatever day it was he “passed” the baptism interview and we all went out to Sonic to celebrate. 1/2 price shakes after 8pm! Heck yeah! It was awesome. Elders, Guy getting baptized, his special female friend from another ward, and a fellowshipper from our ward, and us. So much fun. Jalapeno Chocolate Shake – JUST SAY NO. However, the Peanut Butter Oreo shake is AMAZING. I just really love peanut butter, that’s all. (:

AND! Did I mention Elder McDermott’s mom has a fashion magazine? And he referred me to her to be a model! And there are tons of opportunities in Dallas and Utah! And she’s emailing me about it. Dude. I might be a model. WHAT?!?!?!
I am SO happy to hear how well the farm is doing! Blessings ar e everywhere.. tender mercies from the Lord. Man. Pres Talbot was right when he said not to worry about the money because the Lord would provide. I will ever be thankful for this.. Man. I love being a missionary and I love that it’s blessing more lives than just mine. I love it!
I got your package. Thanks a ton! SO good. The blueberries were gone super fast- Sister Hall and I loved them a lot. (:

I hope I’m not forgetting to tell y’all anything important.. I probably am.. but such is life. There is always next week. And my time to email this week is almost up. We get to go to the temple on Wednesday! YEAH! I’m so excited! Got through chapter 4 and part of 5 in Jesus the Christ. AMAZING book. Learning a lot from the war chapters in Alma. Lovin’ erry minute of it. I never thought two hours wouldn’t be enough study time… seriously. I love y’all! Stay amazing! The church is true.. hopefully you know that already! One day I’ll write people back, I promise!  Love Sister Sarah Schuerman

May 27, 2014

photo 4DSCN5541(1)  The storm clouds from last week. Wednesday they were able to attend the temple.  They helped a member with her family submissions.  She said it was a really wonderful experience.  Sarah happy and working hard to share the Gospel.  Grateful she is willing to sacrifice her time to share her testimony with others.

Mother’s Day!

Mother Dear, I love you so,

Your happy, smiling face
Is such a joy to look at;
It makes home a lovely place.
Mother dear, I love you so.
Your lovely, shining eyes
Are just like stars that twinkle
Way up in the bright blue skies.
Mother dear, I love you so.
I’ll try the whole day through
To please our Heav’nly Father.
I’m so glad he gave me you

Decipher for non members:  p’day= personal day of the week, LA= Less Active, PM= Partmember family – at least one member of the family is a member, FHE= Family Home Evening = a day set aside to spend time together.  Zone Conference is a meeting of missionaries within a specific area (zone)ImageImage

So on with my week. We had zone pday and it was SO much fun! Baseball bats.. and soda. Yes. You shake the cans up as much as you can then you throw em like a baseball and someone hits them with a bat and they explode. Awesome. It was sooo much fun! You wouldn’t think it would be that much fun- but it was. Hahah. I’m like the only one that somehow didn’t get covered in soda. Seriously, every time I hit it- it just exploded perfectly away from me.. only my ankles got sprayed.
So after that.. we got to have FHE with a member and it was super fun! I love the members here- I could stay in Buckley my whole mission and be just fine. Seriously. And maybe one day I’ll figure out all of the boundaries properly and not accidentally drive out of the zone on a weekly basis.. Oops.. hahah.
We had Zone Meeting on Wednesday and it was really really good. I love zone meeting- and we have Zone Conference this Wednesday- even better! I’m pretty stoked for it. But anyway- we had a great day Wednesday. We were able to teach this awesome investigator M and her two kids T&T. It was great- invited her to be baptized- she’s not sure yet.. but that’s expected because it was only the first lesson.
Thursday was SERVICE. Gosh.. service kills me. Something I’m really going to start working on is having more charity.. because I just don’t have it. I don’t. It’s awful- I know.. But I’ll get better.. I just have to ask for His help- seriously.
Friday we had another STELLAR lesson with a LA/PM family who actually almost isn’t LA anymore! Another baptism invitation extended- and I have hope. They’re progressing awesomely.
Saturday was slightly more sad because we had to make a decision to drop some investigators.. they just aren’t ready yet.. So sad.. but maybe in a few weeks/months we’ll go back and see how they are..
Sunday… Colorado decided to be crazy and it’s snowing again. Seriously. What is this? It was soooo nice- almost hot- for a week+ and then it just started snowing.. and it’s still snowing. But! It’s alright. It’s not that cold.. which is weird but whatever. I guess after the -20s that I experienced upon my arrival helped adjust me for the 33 and snowing that’s going on right now. Hahah. Sunday was great though. Church was all about mothers and that was super sweet- made me super baby hungry… (Oh my gosh! Fun story! We really have to be careful about what we say because not Mormons take stuff like ‘I need to get married- I’m baby hungry’ the wrong way.. Rumor now has it that Mormons eat babies inside of our temples.. seriously?! That’s just wrong.. people are ridiculous. We don’t eat babies people- we love them too much.) So anyway- we got to make ourselves sick off of pie during relief society. hahah. And then SKYPING was crazy and awesome. It was seriously so good to see my mommy and dad! I love y’all so much! I’m almost out of time for today though! I’ll email some pictures here in a bit. It’s been awesome, I love being a missionary. The church is true. Read your scriptures. Love one another. Stay awesome.
